First and second meeting updates

The Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme (DIAS) Advisory Committee (the Committee) was established in 2016 to provide advice and assistance to the Department of Health (the Department) on the development of policy for the DIAS Standards, implementation arrangements and conformity assessment, and associated regulation impacts.

Information about the Committee

The Department sought nominations for membership from key professional, industry, and consumer representative groups. Fourteen members with expertise in diagnostic imaging policy, practice, standards development and accreditation, health administration, and health consumer advocacy, were appointed. Functions of the Committee include:

  • providing interpretative advice on existing standards
  • developing, in consultation with the Department, a process for developing, reviewing and maintaining standards
  • reviewing and revising existing standards
  • providing advice on aligning the DIAS with other relevant accreditation programs to avoid duplication
  • developing new standards in response to new government policy, emerging patient safetyrisks, non-compliance issues or patient complaints
  • recommending revised implementation arrangements under the DIAS, including consideration of arrangements for conformity assessments, and
  • providing advice on the administration of the DIAS.

In executing these functions, the Committee will be assisted, as required, by subject-specific working groups comprised of members of the Committee, with additional external expertise sought where needed.

Outcomes of recent meetings

The inaugural meeting of the Committee was held on 7 December 2016, with a focus on administrative and operational matters in order to inform the Committee’s ongoing program of work. The second meeting was held on 8 June 2017. Key happenings include

  • endorsement of the Committee Member Guidelines and Terms of Reference
  • discussion regarding the history and the current state of the DIAS
  • discussion of common concerns raised by the DIAS Accreditors
  • discussion of DIAS Standards 1.5, Equipment Servicing Standard, Standard 1.6, Healthcare Associated Infection Standard,  and Standard 2.2, Consumer Consent and Information Standard, which resulted in the establishment of three working groups to further consider the issues raised in relation to these standards
  • discussion of the Committee’s priorities and forward Work Plan, and
  • endorsement of a communication strategy to engage with stakeholders in relation to DIAS reform options.
