On 10 June 2016, the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Review Taskforce held its eleventh meeting. Following is an outcomes summary from the meeting.

Principles and Rules Committee

Members agreed that a further recommendation from the Principles and Rules Committee on specialist to specialist referrals be included as part of public consultation.

Clinical Committees update

Members noted three items in relation to the Review’s Clinical Committees:

  • process for when multiple Clinical Committees review the same MBS items;
  •  a general update on the second tranche Clinical Committees; and
  • reports and recommendations for public consultation from the first tranche Clinical Committees – obstetrics, gastroenterology, thoracic medicine, and ear nose and throat surgery.

Strategic Issues

Members agreed to establish 7 smaller working groups to address broader cross cutting issues identified through stakeholder consultation. These relate to:

  • data transparency;
  • drivers of growth;
  • payment innovation;
  • ongoing process for MBS Review;
  • relative value of MBS services;
  • consumer issues; and
  • research and clinical trials.
